Copenhagen Historic Grand Prix – Prelude Rally 2022
VINTAGE CAVALCADE TO THE TOWN HALL
Today marks the start of the 21st edition of Copenhagen Historic Grand Prix – known around as CHGP. The biggest and most famous Danish race for (not only) classic cars is held at a specially prepared street circuit at Bellahøj. Every year it gathers hundreds of participants and tens of thousands of visitors, and this edition is no exception! However, preceding the fast motoring there is a prelude rally from the circuit to Rådhuspladsen, where the inaugurating press conference in the Town Hall takes place.
A couple dozen cars created a special cavalcade, escorted through the streets of Copenhagen by the police. The group was led by three Lotus Cortina, followed by an Aston Martin DB5 and a couple modern models from the British brand. Then came a magical vintage trio. On the forefront was an Auto Union monoposto driven by 87-year-old Harry Lund. WIthout a doubt, it was the most impressive duo! Shortly after followed a Mercedes-Benz S-series and a phenomenal Bentley Speed 8. There was a great variety of cars from different eras so everyone could find something to their taste. Who would not like a Porsche 356 Pre-A or a Lamborghini 400GT 2+2?
ROYAL CONFERENCE AND FAMOUS PANCAKES
When every car was parked on the Town Hall Square and immediately surrounded by curious passers-by and tourists, the crews and guests headed into the Rådhus. In Festesalen welcome speeches were made and various achievements celebrated. CHGP is aiming towards being a carbon-neutral race by 2025 and they have just made their first step – recognised by FIA’s sustainability star. Additionally, the entire track has been refreshed with new asphalt surface to ensure the best standards possible – safety is paramount!
There was also a special guest at the gathering – HRH Prince Joachim – who is also partaking in the actual race in the Pro/Am class. He will be piloting a Lotus Cortina, teamed up with Tom Kristensen. After the official part was over, everyone moved to the other side of the banquet room, subconsciously attracted by the smell of Town Hall’s famous pancakes. I can assure you, they indeed were delicious!
OFF RACING TO BELLAHØJ
One-and-a-half hours after arriving to the city centre the cavalcade was ready to head back to Bellahøj. Passing through much smaller crowd already, all the vehicles headed onto Vester Voldgade. Some drivers really went flat out from the square, putting on a good show for those who stayed until the end. To my delight, my favourite Auto Union with its charismatic driver did not disappoint, either!
Racing starts on Friday at 5pm and will continue over the weekend. All eight classes will start with practice drives, qualifications and then, eventually, racing heats. If you fancy some fast motoring, long for the smell of high-octane fuel and are by the chance in Copenhagen – it is not too late to join. Race on!
